Covid Protocols
We are continuously monitoring the Covid situation in Italy. We will update this page as we learn of new information, but please refer to Italy’s official tourism website, the U.S. Embassy in Italy website, and other government websites/news outlets for the most up-to-date travel information.
Traveling to Italy
Before entering Italy, from any country of origin and for any travel reason, the digital European Passenger Locator Form (EU PLF) must be completed. Travelers from Canada, Japan, Israel, and the United States can enter Italy without any quarantine obligation, provided that:
1. They fill out the Passenger Locator Form before entering Italy.
2. They present a document certifying that they have performed a molecular PCR or rapid antigen test in the 48 hours prior to arrival in Italy with negative results.
3. They present on arrival a COVID-19 Green Pass issued by the Health Authorities of their home country certifying:
A) Complete vaccination against COVID-19 performed at least 14 days beforehand (Travelers vaccinated in the United States can prove this via the “white card” bearing the CDC logo.),
B) Recovery from COVID-19 and the termination of medical isolation (the medical certificate, prepared by a health official, confirming recovery from COVID must be dated no more than six months before departure).
Passengers unable to present a valid vaccination or recovery certificate will have to self-isolate on arrival for five days, inform the Prevention Department of the area health authority, and undergo a molecular PCR or rapid antigen test at the end of the isolation.
Green Passes must be in Italian, English, French or Spanish and can be presented in digital or printed formats. As of August 6, 2021, everyone over the age of 12 must present a COVID-19 digital green certificate to access the services and activities listed below:
- Traveling by air, train, ship, ferry, or bus throughout Italy
- Indoor restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors and pastry shops
- Public performances and sporting events, both outdoors and indoors
- Museums
- Swimming pools and gyms
- Private parties, such as wedding receptions
- Festivals and trade fairs
- Spas and fitness centers
- Gaming halls and casinos
Returning Home
All air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens and fully vaccinated people, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 3 days before travel or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months before they board a flight to the United States.
Most major airlines now accept at-home testing kits that are available to order with the purchase of a round trip ticket. Testing kit information can be found here for American Airlines, here for United, and here for Delta. These kits must be delivered to a U.S. address before your trip.
You can also get tested at the FCO Rome airport at the Terminal 3 Arrivals area from midnight until 8pm every day. They offer two types of tests:
- €20 for an Antigen Test - results within 20 minutes
- €69.88 for a Molecular Test - swab result can be picked up in person at the airport within 36 hours
Tests can be paid for at the airport by credit card, ATM, or directly by smartphone, using the contactless payment apps. To access the service, you need to pre-register online on this website, and go directly to the Test Area at the airport.
At the FLR Florence airport, the Misericordia offers passengers on departure and arrival the opportunity to carry out voluntary swab, serological, and antigen tests. Tests are carried out in the structure located in front of the airport entrance every day from 8am until 7 pm. You will have to reserve your test in advance on this website.
Tests are provided at the following costs:
- Antigen Test - €20,00 (€ 35,00 for those who don't have an airline ticket or a boarding pass)
- Swab (PCR) Test - €75,00
Entry requirements are updated often, so we recommend checking the most up-to-date information before your trip. The U.S. Embassy in Italy website has more detailed information regarding COVID testing in Italy. Please visit the CDC’s website for the most current return requirements.
Mask Requirements
It is no longer mandatory to wear masks outdoors, but you must always carry one with you and wear it if it is not possible to maintain a safe distance in crowds. Masks must still be worn in indoor public places such as bars, restaurants, museums, and public transport. You can find more detailed information here.
Flights
The best airport options for flights into Italy are Florence (FLR), Rome (FCO), and Pisa (PSA). You will need a passport to travel internationally. Expedited passport processing (an additional $60 fee) is currently taking up to 12 weeks. If you already have a passport, make sure it is not expired or does not expire within 6 months of your travel dates. We recommend purchasing travel insurance in case of a change in pandemic status before the wedding.
Ground Transportation
From Rome there are plenty of trains to get you into Tuscany, but public transportation will not be available directly to the villa and public transport to the town of Volterra is difficult. We highly recommend taking the train or flying into Florence or Pisa and renting a car for the rest of the journey. We will try to arrange guests into carpool groups if you are not comfortable driving in another country. For those that do drive, you will need an International Driving Permit. These are available at select AAA locations, and they are very easy to obtain. You will need to bring a valid driver’s license, fill out an application, and pay a $20 fee. They are valid for a period of one year from the date of issuance.
Lodging
Volterra is an authentic small town removed from the overly crowded sites of Italy. That being said, it will be void of most major hotel chains. There are, however, plenty of great Airbnbs and boutique hotels. They can be booked through Airbnb, Kayak, Booking.com, etc. Search in Prato d’Era or Volterra to be near the wedding venue. We will provide shuttle transportation on the day of the wedding and will post updates as we have them.
Climate
The forecast is estimating a high of 74° and low of 48° on October 2nd, so please pack an extra layer for al fresco dining in the evening. We will provide heaters during the reception.
